ONE-TIME ONLY EVENTS:      

 

Following are special, short-term opportunities that take place during a limited time frame.
  

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
Relay for Life
is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer; remember loved ones lost to the disease; and fight back against a disease that takes too much.  The 24-hour relay event will be celebrated on May 19-20 in Los Banos, Mariposa, Modesto, Patterson, Ripon, and Tracy; Jun. 29-30 in Escalon; Jun. 9-10 in Waterford; and July 28-29 in Riverbank. Participant walkers may sign up or donate by clicking here.  Volunteers, ages 16 years and older, are needed on the first day of each relay to register walkers and teams, assist with the sales and set up of luminaries for the evening Luminary Ceremony honoring cancer victims, and help with other activities during the event and on Sunday to assist with clean up at the conclusion of the event at all sites.  Teams are also invited to sign up, gather pledges, and participate to raise dollars for the fight against cancer!  Don't miss one moment of this life and community affirming event! 
  

 

CALIFORNIA DENTAL ASSOCIATION (CDA) 

 

CDA Cares Free Dental Clinic will provide FREE dental services on Fri., May 18 and Sat., May 19 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Modesto Centre Plaza.  More than 1,500 patients who have difficulty accessing care, including the uninsured, underinsured, unemployed, and other others in need are expected to receive services and are seen on a first-come, first-served basis during the 2-day event.  Community volunteers and dental professionals are needed to donate their time and skills to offer cleanings, fillings extractions, oral health education, and assistance in finding a dental home.  Medical professionals (physicians, dental lab technicians, nurses, pharmacists, translators, dentists, specialist - including oral surgeons, hygienists, assistants, dental students, etc.) are needed to provide direct services to patients.  Additional community volunteers are needed to escort patients and translate, dispense medication, set up and tear down the clinic, register patients and volunteers, conduct exit interviews, enter data, provide oral health education and more.  Flexible shifts are available Thurs., May 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for clinic set up and volunteer registration; Fri., May 18 and Sat., May 19 for clinic services from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Sun., May 20 for clinic tear down from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  A volunteer orientation dinner is scheduled on Thurs., May 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel.  Clinic floor volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and lounge/greeter volunteers must be at least 13 years.  Clinical provider volunteers must have all appropriate and active licenses to provide treatment to patients.  All volunteers must register on the agency's web site.  Please click here for a complete list of volunteer opportunities, schedules, requirements, registration information, etc.  CDA Cares is a collaborative effort among the CDA, CDA Foundation, and the national charitable organization Mission of Mercy.     

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, STANISLAUS
22nd Annual Recognition Dinner
will be held Thurs., Jun. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Martin Peterson Event Center in Modesto.  The event highlights the agency's accomplishments and recognizes those who have made it possible while raising much needed funds for "Building homes, building hope, building communities, one nail at a time..."  Volunteers, ages 16 years and older, are needed to set up tables, place dinnerware, and assist with decorations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; serve dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. and to assist with clean up at 8:30 to 10 p.m. Volunteer servers must wear black pants/bottoms and white collared shirts.  Tickets for the event are still available at just $40 per person or $320 for a table of eight.  Habitat for Humanity, Stanislaus is a faith-based housing ministry connecting people from all faiths and walks of life to work with families in need to improve housing in this community and worldwide.


HabitatNOW
, swings into Modesto with two special opportunities this baseball season.  Youth volunteers, ages 10 to 18 years, will meet and work alongside Modesto Nuts players and Mascots to build homes for low-income families.  Saturday build days are scheduled May 19 and Jun. 9 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Hilltop Avenue with lunch provided.  Younger children, ages 5 to 9, may also participate in Kid's Club with special arts and crafts, bake and decorate cookies, and fan letter activities to recognize the hard working Modesto Nuts players at the agency's Kearney Avenue office on May 22 and Jun. 5 and 19 from 3 to 5 p.m.  Parents are also welcome at these family-friendly events.  Additional build opportunities for volunteers, ages 16 years and older, are available Tuesday - Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Volunteer orientations are held at 12:30 p.m. every Thursday and one Saturday a month for interested volunteers.  The next Saturday orientation is scheduled on Apr. 28.  Habitat for Humanity addresses the problem of poverty housing by building homes in partnership with families who provide "sweat equity" and benefit from low-interest loans to purchase their new homes.  

 

STANISLAUS COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE
A Presidential Primary Election
will be held on Tues., Jun. 5.  Volunteers are needed to serve as Election Officers, bilingual Election Officers, and "on-call" Election Officers at the polls on Election Day.  Election Officers help set up the voter precinct, maintain ballot security, voting equipment, and assist voters as necessary.  Election Officers receive a $95 stipend for their time and commitment, which includes serving 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Election Day and a mandatory 2 to 3 hour training class.  The classes are offered between May 14 and May 24 in Modesto, Oakdale, and Turlock and provide an excellent overview of the Election Day process and hands-on equipment instruction to ensure accurate set-up and operation of the voting equipment.  Interested individuals must be registered voters in California, United States citizens, at least 18 years of age, attend training, and be available to work on Jun. 5th.  Please click here for detailed volunteer information and application.  Your time as a volunteer would set a tremendous example to citizens in preserving our democratic process!
 

UNITED WAY OF STANISLAUS COUNTY
Spring Bowl-A-Thon - This family-fun event will roll into Modesto on Sat., May 19 at the McHenry Bowl with two sessions available at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.  Individuals and teams participate in an afternoon of bowling, refreshments, and a chance to win great prizes!  Registration is $200 per team of four which includes two games, shoe rental, pizza, and lots of fun.  No bowling skills are required - in fact the lowest scoring team still wins a prize!  Teams can also earn raffle tickets by donating a case of bottled water for partner agency client services.  All proceeds benefit the United Way and partner health and human service agencies throughout Stanislaus County.  Please click

CENTRAL CALIFORNIA ART ASSOCIATION
Share your appreciation of the arts as a docent with the C.C.A.A. Mistlin Gallery.  Adult volunteers are needed to greet and assist gallery visitors, answer telephones, office duties, mailings, assist with events and shows, hang art, etc.  Excellent training and job shadowing is provided.  Flexible scheduling is available between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday - Friday and 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.  For more than 50 years, the C.C.A.A. has been providing Stanislaus County and surrounding areas with quality experiences for creative expression. 


HUMANE SOCIETY OF STANISLAUS COUNTY

Improve the lives of animals at the Humane Society's shelter or in your home!  Volunteers, ages 18 years and older, are needed to socialize the animals at the shelter, foster animals in their own homes until they are ready for adoption, staff the office, answer phones, data entry of animal adoption records, staff the cat adoption center at Petco and other showcases, organize fund raisers and write grants to support these needed services.  Flexible volunteer scheduling is available weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and as arranged with the agency for outside events.  Run entirely by volunteers, the mission of the Human Society of Stanislaus County is to educate the public about humane practices; to encourage the spay and neuter of pets to eliminate the overpopulation problem facing our community; and to provide a safe and healthy environment to pets in need.

READINGWORKS ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM 

 

Share your love of reading and teach an adult to read!  Change a person's life, their future, and their children's future by opening doors through reading.  Volunteers, ages 16 years and older, spend just 90-minutes twice a week increasing a student's basic reading skills utilizing an easy to follow phonics-based curriculum.  A volunteer orientation is scheduled on Wed., May 23 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a tutor training on Sat., May 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the ReadingWorks Learning Center in Modesto.  After training, volunteers are matched with an adult student who reads at or below a 7th grade level who is available for tutoring at a time and location convenient for the volunteer.  An additional training will be available in Turlock from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wed., May 30.  ReadingWorks, a partnership of the Stanislaus Literacy Center and the Stanislaus County Library, provides free literacy services for adults who need to improve their basic academic skills in Stanislaus County.   

SIERRA VISTA CHILD & FAMILY SERVICES

Use your bi-lingual skills to benefit families struggling with mental health issues.  Volunteers, ages 18 years and up, are needed to translate current brochures and materials from English to Spanish to reach a broader population.  Volunteers may work in the agency's office or virtually.  Interested volunteers should have strong English and Spanish writing skills, good attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines, and computer skills.  Sierra Vista Child & Family Services has been helping abused, neglected and emotionally disturbed children and families in crisis in California's Central Valley since 1972 and provides a wide range of mental health services including foster care, residential treatment, outpatient children and family services, counseling, school based programs, perinatal drug and alcohol treatment, anger management treatment, domestic violence, and family education programs.
